Artist Statement
Happiness, gratitude, and hope are at the heart of my paintings. Living on Whidbey Island, I am continually inspired by the beauty surrounding me, the abundance of summer flowers and produce, quiet beaches, historic places, and the ever-changing natural landscape.
Painting is my way of noticing and honoring that beauty. Through color, light, and familiar scenes, I hope to offer viewers a moment of peace, joy, or connection. Each painting shares something that has captured my attention and reminds us that beauty is often waiting just beyond our door.
Biography
My life and art have been shaped by several distinct landscapes and cultures. I was born in Tunisia, grew up in New York City, and spent many childhood summers with my grandparents in France and Tunisia. My family later moved to Chicago, and I earned my undergraduate degree in drawing, painting, and French.
After college, I returned to Tunisia and taught art at the American Cooperative School of Tunis. During those seven years, I painted watercolors inspired by the country’s landscapes, architecture, people, and culture.
I later moved to Los Angeles, where I taught French before becoming a school administrator and nonprofit leader. Although education became my profession, art remained a constant presence throughout my life.
Watercolor has been my primary medium for more than 50 years. In 2019, I began painting in oils and discovered a new sense of freedom in the richness, texture, and flexibility of the medium. Today, from my studio on Whidbey Island, I work in both watercolor and oil, creating paintings that reflect the places, experiences, and everyday beauty that continue to inspire me.
